ISSUES OVERVIEW

In  January 2001, three years after incorporating, Islamorada enacted their first Comprehensive Plan and called it “Islamorada: The Village That Reclaimed the Keys.”

This planning manuscript is comparable to our constitution in the way it guides the decisions made to manage the Village, along with the Land Development Regulations that define and enforce the spirit and intent of the Comprehensive Plan.

The very first sentence on page one of the plan: “Realizing the following, that the Village incorporated to create a Comprehensive Plan to reclaim the Keys by conserving, preserving and retaining our remarkable assets – our waters and natural environment – and our quality of life.”

Now is the 20-year anniversary of the original plan. Now is a good time to evaluate. Are we abiding by the goals and promises of our constitution? So many positive elements have been implemented in the 20 years. But, can’t we do better?

This section of the ICA website illustrates some of the significant issues Islamorada is facing. We all need to stay focused and involved to assure our weaknesses can be diminished and our strengths highlighted.

Consider getting involved. It's our government determining our quality of life. Staff and council work for us!
