Councilman Mark Gregg’s gotcha moment versus Vice Mayor Henry Rosenthal during the July 14, 2022, Village Council meeting backfired, and in a big way.

While the Fills has historically had major problems with partygoers ruining one of the Village’s most beautiful scenic treasures, since the Village leased the Fills three years ago, the Council has relied on traffic cones, and even voted to install guardrails, which are unnecessary and would further erode one of the region’s natural jewels.

For many of us, the world seems upside down on lots of levels. The cost of living continues to rise with no end in sight. National and international politics is ugly. No one in government appears capable of solving the real challenges of the day. And change is coming at us at a rapid pace.

The Everglades supplies drinking water to 9 million of us in South Florida, including everyone in the Florida Keys, and countless visitors.

Another surprise resignation, secret agreements signed off by the Village Council, two unnecessary payouts of more than $200,000 of taxpayer funds, bizarre accusations, a complete lack of transparency, and an empty legal department.

What can be more important to Islamorada than water? Water flowing south through the Everglades and down to Florida Bay is critical. 

If you had a hard time keeping up with lobbying firm Gray Robinson’s presentation to the village council at the beginning of the June Council meeting, don’t feel bad – it was by design.

Until 12 years ago, you would have been hard-pressed to find a lovelier section of the Overseas Highway than the span of roadway between Upper and Lower Matecumbe – what we locals call the Fills. It’s our little slice of one of America’s Scenic Highways.
